YABATECH students shut down campus after cult attack

Following the crisis which took place on Thursday morning in Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) Lagos, reports reveals that the institution has been shut down as academic programmes were grounded,

while movements were restricted.
The development was as a result of a protest by the students of the institution, who were expressing their displeasure at an attack on a student by suspected cult members on Wednesday night.
Some policemen, who attempted entering the campus to quell the unrest, were turned back at the gate by the students, who held everyone within the campus hostage for hours.
When our correspondent visited the campus, he observed that two fully loaded staff buses were prevented from entering the institution.
It was learnt that a clash between the cultist and some students the previous night had kept everybody awake.
A source in the Department of Mass Communication explained that the clash started after an unnamed student was attacked by some cult members with machetes and was wounded.
Our correspondent learnt that the student had a misunderstanding with a suspected cult member.
Another source who pleaded anonymity said, "The student had ignored the cult member when that one told him to do something for him. He was later beaten, clubbed and cut with matchetes.
"Somebody alerted the victim's friends and they also came out and faced the cult members."
It was said that in the Wednesday rampage, security men on the campus were assaulted, while some school facilities were damaged.
The students took over the gates of the school and chased away security men to protest the Wednesday night attack.
One of the students at the gate told a source that the security men guarding the campus had failed in their duties.
He said,"Two weeks ago, they (the cultists) stormed the Art Block and wreaked havoc while our security men were merely watching. So the students decided to take over the security of the school."
It was observed that a few of the security men had changed into mufti, while some of the students who tried to record the riot with their camera phones were assaulted.
The school's major road was also barricaded. The students said they were awaiting the Rector to give an address on the way forward.
Later, the Dean of Students Affairs, Mr. Omobayo Raheem, addressed the warring youths, urging them to calm down.
He said, "Like many of you, I have not been able to sleep as a result of this development. I apologise to every one of us as a result of the injury one of us sustained. There is no doubt that injury to one is injury to all.
"I can assure you that the management has set up a high-powered panel to look into this and none of the culprits will go unpunished be they students or lecturers."
He said the wounded student was being treated at the school's medical centre.
The Rector, Dr. Kudirat Ladipo, later came to address the protesters. She capped her address with a prayer for peace on the campus.

I fell in love with this write up.... read and enjoy

Joey’s Chronicles Of A Lagos Aje-Butter: “Missing My Lovely Agberos”
TO MATCH FEATURE STORY TRANSPORT NIGERIA LIGHTS.

TO MATCH FEATURE STORY TRANSPORT NIGERIA LIGHTS.

I am an Aje-butter. Not by birth, or by formings, or by swag – I am simply an unapologetic ajebutter by default. I didn’t choose to be born one. God, without seeking my opinion (because He’s God, I guess), gave me the genes of an Ajebutter  and a funny BriMericana accent . By luck or some twisted work of fate, fortune, karma (I might have killed ten defenseless puppies in my last life) or destiny, I have found myself in Lagos, crazy Lasgidi, and this is my story…

I hate to admit it, but I think I’m in love with Lagos. Yeah, it’s a tough one for me to accept, but recently I took a trip back to the Southern Nigeria, did a brief stop in Port Harcourt (where I grew up. Diapers and nappies and all), then made the road trip to Uyo. But 3 days into my little journey to my past, depression set in. I felt homesick. It wasn’t simply the ache in my heart for a taste of some awful Yoruba cooking (I meant the ‘awful’ part, no apologies), or the longing for the sight of rickety Danfo buses with their stereotypical uncultured weed-smoking conductors who never miss an opportunity to scream ‘Bole’  or offer silent prayers  in their hearts (to Sango) that you forget to demand your remaining N50 T.fare balance in their possession.

I missed Lagos. I longed for the frustrating traffic jams that make you age faster than than your dad. In the previous six months, I could put good money on the fact that half of my life have been spent in lengthy traffic jams, and the other half have been spent on…a lot of things actually. Like going on 17 first dates, which went horribly awful, seeing endless fights in Mushin and Ajegunle, desperately trying to steer clear of them Agberos who would waste no opportunity to have a go at you, and working off my ass at my awesome job.

I also did miss the ladies and all their little, lovely, and sometimes nerve-wrecking peculiarities. Seeing them sashay past me, booties and grace, every day gives me more reason to keep death at bay. Sure I wanna go to the afterlife, but not yet. Haven’t had my fill of Alomo. Or can I take my favourite bitters to the afterlife? Not sure God will approve.

I missed the Agberos. Their hugely distressing mannerisms, their crude pidgin English, their scary menacing stares, and their penchant for Marijuana. Walking past my home every day, the whiff of spiff, that banned drug, smoked by the Lagos Agbero Nation, keeps me company. I even found myself longing for the haze of the smoke in the air. It’s shocking because I don’t smoke. And even though my Mum says it’s bad, I secretly long for the weed-tainted air to soothe my puritan lungs. God help me. I’m a bad person!

It’s official now. Lagos is my home. Though I’d still have a special place in my heart for Port Harcourt, but Lagos rules my path now. This city of angels, demons and Agberos is my home. Fate, finally has found me.

See you next Tuesday.

FERRARI PATROL: DUBAI FIGHTS CRIME IN STYLE

Police in Dubai have been showing off their new Ferrari patrol car. The vehicle arrives hot on the heels of a Lamborghini that has already joined the city state's crime-fighting ranks.

The car

- sporting the green and white of Dubai Police - was unveiled at the foot of the Burj al-Khalifa, the world's tallest building.
 .
It would be used by women police to patrol tourist areas.

The introduction of luxury Italian cars to the police force is being seen as a sign of economic recovery in the Gulf emirate where a housing bubble burst in 2008.

In Dubai, petrol is generally cheaper than drinking water, and authorities face significant challenges to curb road accidents caused by speeding.

Last year, official figures put road deaths at 122, with 2,161 injuries, many of which occurred on the emirate's notorious Sheikh Zayed highway.

Food For Thought... Would the Nigerian Police ever get to this level ??

Community battle Lagos Church over noise pollution

Community battle Lagos Church ovise pollutionincrease font size

There seems to be no end in sight to the feud between residents of Mojisola Street, Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos State and Evangelical Apostolic Church. The residents are accusing the church, owned by Prophet
Olatunji Talabi, aka Lesekese, of causing noise pollution in the area anytime it holds its services.

They said the noise emanating from speakers at the church, which was under construction, was "deafening".
It was learnt that a number of petitions had been sent to the state government over the issue.
In one of the petitions signed by Olusegun Olomofe, and sent to Governor Babatunde Fashola, the residents stated that government agency in charge of controlling such excesses was incapable of performing its statutory function.
The petition reads in part, "Since Evangelical Apostolic Church moved into the neighbourhood, its activities have been inimical to the general well-being of the residents and the noise level unbearable.
"Many elderly residents are not able to sleep whenever their service is in session."
The Chairman, MEGA Community Development Association, Mr. A.A. Bilesanmi, also showed our correspondent some letters of complaint written by the association to the police, Lagos State Environment Protection Agency and the Lagos State Government.
The MEGA CDA is made up of upper and lower Mojisola Street; Emmanuel Olorunfemi Street; Alimi Ogunyemi Street; Prince Ajenifuja Street and Gbagba Crescent.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the government initially replied the residents of the street.
The environmental protection agency wrote to the Chairman of the Mojisola Street Residents Association, Mr. Oye Balogun, saying the church had agreed to stop using external speakers; loud musical instruments, microphones and drums except on Sundays.
The letter by LASEPA said, "Sunday services should hold between 8am and 1pm. Evening services, including Sundays, should not exceed 8pm. Vigils should be reduced to once a month and must be without loudspeakers and musical instruments. The church is to ensure good neighbourliness with residents in the area."
However residents complained that nothing had changed.
Balogun, an 81-year-old retiree, said, "I am a retiree and I am old; all I want to do at this age is to eat and rest since I am not working anymore; but the level of the noise makes that difficult.
"We can't say that they shouldn't worship because freedom of worship is entrenched in the constitution of this country but the freedom to make noise is not allowed. We have been to the Ministry of the Environment but no action was taken. There was a time that LASEPA locked up the church but it was only for a few hours."
There was a service going on when PUNCH Metro visited the church on Wednesday morning and observed that, indeed, the noise from the church was deafening.
One of the church's pastors, Ilesanmi Oluwasakin, who spoke with our correspondent, said the church was being antagonised by the some Muslims in the executive of the CDA.
He said, "It is because three out of the executive members are Muslims, that's why they want the church shut down. After they reported, LASEPA came to investigate and closed the church. But when they realised that there was no problem, they allowed us to reopen.
"We have reduced the number of speakers we use. And after the residents started deflating the tires of vehicles belonging to our congregants, we bought a space for parking. We only have vigils once a month."
The General Manager of LASEPA, Mr. Rashees Shabi, said the noise pollution made by EAC ahd been reported to his office.
He said, "After the complaints were made, we shut down the church twice. The last time we closed it down was in May 2012. For us to open it again, an agreement was reached between all parties, including LASEPA.
"We decided that there shouldn't be external loud speakers and no vigil until the church building is completed. That agreement was signed by the complainants and the church.
"So when the executive members of Mojisola Street saw that EAC had breached the terms of the agreement, why didn't they report to LASEPA?
"If the residents report and we found that the church still pollutes the environment with noise, LASEPA would shut down the church indefinitely."

Pop star Ayo ' Wizkid ' Balogun and Empire Mates Entertainment (EME) are back in business. The news of the spilt began to melt away when Wizkid was seen with label mates, singer Shaydee and DJ Xclusive
